"Planet & Stars" Carshalton Carnival 2009 reaches new heights!
The sun shone, the temperatures rose and the crowds poured into Carshalton Park on Saturday as the annual Carnival organised by Wallington & Carshalton Round Table and Rotary Club of Carshalton came to town.
19 parade floats decorated with spacemen, aliens, rockets and telescopes to celebrate the parade theme of "Planets & Stars" started off from Sutton Arena and weaved their way through Carshalton, arriving at the park in a burst of noise and carnival atmosphere with music from the Haverettes All Girl Marching Band and the Croydon Steel Orchestra amongst others. Carshalton Cheerleaders provided their usual energy to the parade as well as performing a stunning routine within the carnival arena.
Mayor of Sutton Margaret Court crowned Olivia Cooper as this year's Carnival Queen, and awarded trophies to next year's Carnival Queen Rachel Digman and the runner-up Elouise Potter.
Congratulations to the following parade float winners:-
- Beddington May Queen won the Lord Crook Cup for the Best May Queen
- The Circle Residents Association won the St Helier British Legion Cup for the Most Outstanding Organisation
- Queen Mary's Hospital for Children won the Best Walking Group Cup
- London Wildcare won the British Legion Cup for the Most Humorous Entry
- The Carshalton Cheerleaders float won the RAFA Trophy for the Best Youth Entry
In the arena, we had great displays from the Essex Dog Display Team and the battling Cumberland giants. Together with Rose’s funfair direct from the Epsom Derby weekend, over 60 trade and charity stalls, the Rockstock Musical Showcase, a licensed bar and the Carnival balloon race – the day had something for everyone young and old.
My sincere thanks to everyone who came along and supported the event - it was great to see so many local people enjoying what was a true fun-filled local community event.
Thanks also to Sutton Council who have been great in supporting us – plus the many, many volunteers from other clubs and organisations without whom the Carnival wouldn’t happen at all.
A date for your diary - the 2010 Carshalton Carnival will be on Saturday 12 June 2010!
